St. Francis at Serra High School Baseball

When visiting Serra to photograph, it always seems to be a very photogenic school as far as sports goes. It seems like I come away with some fairly decent shots!

The game went well. The standard shots I usually try to get where easy to get.

Drumming for a cause

"San Mateo resident Chris Anthony, 43, will perform a drum roll on Saturday, March 21, 2009, that, with a lot of perseverance and a little luck, could last as long as four hours. If he accomplishes his mission, the feat will break a Guinness World Record and raise money for multiple sclerosis."

The captions sums it all up. I shot this again for the Daily News. It was definatly a fun shoot.

Brave Brother!

"Duran Andrade, left, an 11-year-old from San Mateo, along with his father, Miguel, and 6-year-old brother Javier, talk about an accident that happened in January at the Dumbarton Bridge. San Mateo County and the San Mateo Fire Department commended Duran for his bravery for pulling his brother out of their overturned car and carrying him to safety."

I am an older brother and a father... I know I could never leave my kid in the car, even if it was on fire! Good Job kid!

Manheimer was appointed to the State Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention on Jan. 21, by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger."

Walking in the Rain

"Left, Mika Fujikuro, and her mother, Tomiko, of San Mateo, walk their dog, Bobby, at Beresford Park in San Mateo on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009. The National Weather Service is predicting a three-day break in the rain starting today with another storm rolling in this weekend."

Had to go out to get some weather shots and came across these two nice ladies with their wonderful golden retriever.

Serra Basketball

Serra is probably know as one of the best teams on the Peninsula, even Berry Bonds attended this school when he was young. Though this is not baseball, the Giants general manager, Brian Sabean, was there to watch his son play basketball.

Breaking News!

So there was a shooting today that I heard over the scanner. Now I could have sworn they said "OFFICER DOWN" but from the link on the story I am about to give you there is nothing about it. Any way, it took me about 5 min to get over to San Mateo where the action was taking place from Menlo Park. Difficult like usual to get through but here are a few shot I was able to get.

Honoring Leo J. Ryan

Patricia Ryan, left, and U.S. Rep Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, embrace at the end of "The Legacy of Leo J. Ryan" video presentation. A Ceremony was held on Monday to rename the U.S. Post Office on Ellsworth Ave. in San Mateo after the congressman. Gunmen killed Ryan, three journalists and one Jonestown defector in 1978, shortly after the congressman visited the South American settlement founded by Jim Jones of the Peoples Temple. Speier, an aid to Ryan at the time, was shot five times in the attack.

"Center, Diane Wilhelm, with Meaningful Charms, assists, left, Sue Galassi, of Novato, and, right, Donna Caldwell, of San Francisco, on Friday during the Harvest Festival Original Arts and Craft Show held at the San Mateo County Event Center in San Mateo through Sunday."

Finally back from vacation. Took a couple weeks off to spend it with my family and with my newborn, Alexandros. Here is one from the other day and there are more to come!

CSM Football vs Foothill

I have watched and photograph this club for a while now. They have a very talented bunch of kids who play for them but some times struggle to win because of... well I am not giving my opinion on this since I gotta go up there and shoot from time to time.

Serra High School againt St. Francis Boys water polo

St. Francis High School visited Serra yesterday to duel it out in the water.

St. Francis dominated most of the game holding a large lead in the third quarter.

Boys water polo is naturally faster and more aggressive with more opportunities to capture good photos. I recomend water polo to any one who is starting off in sports photography. All you need for the sport is a 70-200 and you are set.

Union Wars

"Andrew McClain, of Fresno, puts together picket signs. Thousands of SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West members gathered at the San Mateo County Event Center on Friday protesting against shutting them out of contract negotiations."

Man what is going on. Protest, poverty, bankrupt banks, but they say we are not in a bind with our economy??? I don't understand what more needs to happen... I have never seen so much happening and so many people complaining that they cannot live on their paychecks and people getting laid off left and right with the highest unemployment rate in a very long time.

Lulu's

"Lulu’s owner Jamie Sears, of San Mateo adjusts the dress on one of her manikin on Thursday in San Mateo. Lulu’s is featuring a trunk show featuring fashion designer Robert Rodriquez through Sunday with a portion of the proceeds from the show going to the Mills-Peninsula Breast Center in the fight against breast cancer."

After taking this photo I was asked... "What the heck is a trunk show" I looked puzzled and told him... "I don't know" I probably should have asked and usually do and usually don't like to give an excuse but when you are in a hurry to finish up 5 assignments I have seen my self slip up. Slipping up is easy to do, especially when you first start off. A good rule of thumb to follow is the 5 "W's" Who, What, When, Where, Why, and if you can, How. Another rule is to get the location of where the individual is from. In the caption I have who it is, what they are doing, when it took place, why they are doing it, and where they are doing what they are doing. So where is the slip up? well how a lot of the times pertains explaining what is going on... more detail on something some one you think might know. I did not think that some one might need to know what a "trunk show" is.

Blind Sided

"San Mateo’s John Niupalau tackles Gunn’s Jerrel Lynch in the open field during their game on Saturday."

Man was that a hard hit or what? I had a few other images but I think these where the best of the bunch.

"Gunn’s Nikko Jackson runs the ball against San Mateo defenders during a regular season game in San Mateo on Saturday."

This game was wild over all. I only got to see the first half since I had to rung and get some other stuff out of the way but it was fumble and interception galore!

Peace in the middle east...

"Susan Hasse, of Redwood City, participates in a peace rally held at the corner of 4th Avenue and El Camino Real in San Mateo on Thursday. The Declaration of Peace group has held a rally every Tuesday for over three years at the same corner. The group said that if September 11th did not fall on their usual day of rallying, they would still have been out there"

Sorry I just had too.

So today marked the 7th year since 9-11. I can believe its been that long. Just yesterday it seemed I joined the Navy back in March of 2001 and off to war I went. Any way this group was standing at the corner getting some attention from the public.

Aragon Football

AH yes High School Football season is upon us again and you gotta love the lights they have! lol yeah they are not that good.

I forgot how much fun it is to shoot these games and im sure even more fun when I get a 400mm 2.8 IS lens and sit on my lazy butt and shoot from one side of the field.

I did get to meet a photographer who was shooting for the Aragon yearbook since his kids went and go to that school... and... for once in a long time... I had "Camera Envy" HE HAD 2... YES... TWO NIKON D3s... waaaa... but no he was no regular parent.. he was a wedding photographer of 18 years... oh well, nice guy though thats for sure.
